Lower Jordan Creek Watershed Assessment and Management Plan

Partners: Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition (SAWC)

Project Description: The JWP in partnership with SAWC will develop a Lower Jordan Creek Watershed Assessment and Management Plan. As part of this project, JWP will assess current conditions in the lower watershed that impact habitat conditions and work with stakeholders to identify policies and actions to protect and improve the riparian and stream conditions. A focused assessment and management plan for the lower Jordan Creek watershed is necessary as the lower watershed is the most densely developed portion of the watershed where existing and new development impacts or has the potential to impact the creek’s fish habitat and water quality. In addition, the current management plan for the Jordan Creek watershed is nearly a decade old, and does not adequately address current management challenges, particularly in the lower watershed.

Duck Creek Nancy Street Wetland Assessment

Partners: Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition (SAWC), University of Alaska Southeast (UAS)

Project Description: The JWP in partnership with SAWC and the UAS will collect data to determine the effectiveness of the Nancy Street wetland in improving water quality conditions on Duck Creek. Since 1994, Duck Creek was listed on the state’s Impaired Waters List for non-attainment of dissolved oxygen (DO), residues/debris, metals (specifically iron), fecal coliform bacteria, and turbidity standards. The Nancy Street wetland is one of many restoration projects completed on Duck Creek to improve water quality, but there has been little to no water quality monitoring to track the success of this and other restoration efforts. This project will compare data collected by UAS on Duck Creek prior to the establishment of the Nancy Street wetland with data obtained during the project. Jordan Creek Green Infrastructure Project

Partners: Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition (SAWC), Central Council of Tlingit and Haida (CCTHITA), SOURCE, LLC, Trout Unlimited

Project Description: The JWP in partnership with SAWC and CCTHITA designed and built a rain garden to intercept urban runoff from the Airport Shopping Center south of the Glacier Highway. The project also constructed a barrier fence along the banks of Jordan Creek to prevent contaminated snow from being pushed into the creek and to protect the riparian vegetation. Lastly, this project educated the community including the adjacent landowners on the benefits of green infrastructure. The project will improve water quality in Jordan Creek, which is listed as an impaired waterbody for residues, dissolved oxygen (DO) and sediment, by treating urban runoff prior to entering Jordan Creek, and deterring direct discharge of contaminated snow and snow melt into the creek. Restoration, Enhancement, and Mitigation Priorities for Juneau Watersheds

(2015) The JWP compiled watershed restoration, enhancement and mitigation opportunities for improving fish, habitat and water quality in Juneau’s watersheds. Opportunities were compiled from existing information and in-field assessments, and include recommendations such as culvert replacement or realignment, improving fish passage for migratory salmon species, stabilizing and re-vegetating stream banks, implementing storm water Best Management Practices (BMP’s), stormwater retrofitting and/or wetland preservation and protection. This information is presented in a report as well as within our REM Opportunities Map. This project was funded with qualified outer continental shelf oil and gas revenues by the Coastal Impact Assistance Program, Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Interior.

Montana Creek Watershed Stewardship Plan

(2014) The JWP produced the Montana Creek Stewardship Plan, a collaborative and user-based stewardship plan to conserve and protect the watershed and water quality values needed to support wild salmon populations in the Montana Creek watershed. Funding for this project was provided by US Forest Service.

Stormwater Mapping in the Lemon Creek, Vanderbilt Creek and Pederson Hill Creek Watersheds

(2014) The JWP mapped stormwater infrastructure and flows in the Lemon Creek, Vanderbilt Creek and Pederson Hill Creek watersheds to benefit future stormwater treatment BMP location, design, and implementation for targeted storm water quality improvement in these impaired streams. This information is presented in our Juneau Stormwater Hydrography report. Funding for this project was provided by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Partners included the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the City and Borough of Juneau.

Auke Lake Water Quality Monitoring

(2014) The JWP conducted water quality monitoring and user surveys on Auke Lake to assess the summer pollutant loading to the lake primarily due to two-stroke engine use. In addition, the JWP implemented an educational program addressing actions to reduce water pollution. This information is presented in our Auke Lake Water Quality Monitoring Report. This project was completed in partnership with the City and Borough of Juneau. Funding for this project was provided by the Alaska Department of Environmental conservation.

West Glacier and Moose Lake - Re-Vegetation after Culvert Replacements

(2013) The JWP in cooperation with US Fish and Wildlife Service and SAGA completed re-vegetation of stream banks using a toe wood-sod mat design after the US Forest Service replaced culverts on West Glacier Trail and Moose Lake. Funding for this project was provided by US Forest Service.

Lower Jordan Creek Watershed Stormwater Assessment

(2012) The JWP mapped stormwater infrastructure and flows in the urban corridor of lower Jordan Creek watershed to benefit future stormwater treatment BMP location, design, and implementation for targeted storm water quality improvement in this impaired anadromous stream. This information is presented in the Stormwater in Lower Jordan Creek Watershed (USFWS, 2015) report.
